Playdate's certificate has expired: older versions won't update over Wi-Fi

A date has passed on Panic's yellow handheld. The security certificate used by Playdate OS versions older than 3.0.5 expired on 15 October 2026. The certificate is the digital document the device uses to prove who it is when it talks to Panic's servers. Devices on these versions can no longer reach the servers and can't update over Wi-Fi. The games keep running. Only server access is broken.

Panic warned registered owners at the start of October by e-mail and on social media. Nothing has changed for anyone on 3.0.5 or later: Settings > System > System Update works as it always has.

If you missed the date, the fix is Playdate Utility (a desktop program for macOS Big Sur 11 and later, Windows 10 and later, and Linux). You need to connect the device over USB-C and unlock it. Then you download a .pdos firmware file and a .pdkey file from playdatekeys.panic.com and pick them in the program. The device may restart a few times during the install. Whatever you do, don't pull the cable before it's finished.

As far as we could find, nobody has reported a device bricked after the expiry. Leaving a way back open, even if it takes a cable, was the right call in my book. If you have a Playdate forgotten in a drawer somewhere, don't skip this one.
